Gentrification in Russia as a Social Process and a Social Problem

https://doi.org/10.32324/2412-8945-2024-1-37-49

Abstract

The article examines gentrification as a social phenomenon and a social process using examples of Russian and Western cities. Scientific and practical interest in this process is due to its insufficient conceptual understanding. The authors give characteristics of gentrification in relation to Russian realities, and also highlight its models, channels, forms, stages and traps using specific examples. The article shows that gentrification in Russia to a greater extent changes the business and cultural environment of cities, and to a lesser extent — the social affiliation of people; and in almost all of its models leads to the formation of conflicts, some of which have an ethnic component.
