Influence of Latin American Migrants for Regional Development of the USA (Based on the Example of the Southwest Border Region)

Abstract

Based on the results of an empirical study of the influence of Latin American migrants on the regional development of the border problem area located along the US-Mexico border, the economic, social and political aspects of this influence are highlighted. Based on the results of the study, the author comes to the conclusion that immigrants of this ethnocultural group have a generally negative impact on the economy and regional society of the Southwestern border region of the United States, which has formed the specific socio-economic genotype of this territory. This conclusion is based on the weak adaptation of Spanish-speaking migrants to the realities of the American way of life, manifested in the rapid growth of poverty, unemployment and marginal behavior of Latin American migrants and their descendants, compared with other ethnocultural groups in the area. The problematic nature of the border region under study, according to the author of the article, cannot be resolved in a strategic perspective, even through increasing allocations for the social needs of migrants within the framework of state regional policy. The transition from the state of depressive borderland to modernization transborderness is typical only for the outlying districts of the region, which belong to the highly urbanized territories of the most economically developed states of the country California and Texas. In the inner districts of the region, a further aggravation of the problem of political and social rejection of the living conditions of the ever-increasing number of Latin American migrants who make up the dominant part of the population is seen.
